Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline
Most people are back at a desk in two to four weeks, cleared for exercise at six to eight, and still watching their scar change at a year. If you are travelling for surgery, add the days before you are cleared to fly. This page is what normal looks like at each stage, and what is not normal.

The Milestones At A Glance
Days 1 to 3
In hospital, then the hotel.
Weeks 2 to 4
Back to desk work.
Weeks 6 to 8
Cleared for exercise.
Up to 1 year
Scar keeps maturing.
What Is Normal At Each Stage
In hospital, then the hotel
You'll be walking soon after surgery. Keep walks short and avoid overdoing it.
The hardest stretch
Swelling and bruising often peak here. You may still feel tight, but should be able to stand upright.
Standing upright again
Standing gets easier. Take short walks and keep your garment on.
Back to most of life
You can gradually return to normal activities. Swelling may still remain for months.
The shape settles
Most swelling fades, though some day-to-day changes are normal.
Scar maturation
Scars gradually fade and flatten over 12-18 months. Final results vary.
Swelling Peaks Early. The Scar Peaks Months Later
When To Contact Your Care Team Immediately
None of these means something has gone wrong. All of them mean somebody clinical needs to hear about it today rather than at your next review. If you are unsure, call. Nobody has ever been told off for calling.
Flying Afterwards Is Its Own Part Of Recovery
Surgery, immobility, and cabin pressure increase clot risk, especially on long flights.
Book the return flexible
Not fixed. Assume it will move.
Aisle seat
So getting up is not a negotiation.
Compression stockings
In addition to your garment, if your surgeon advises them.
Move every hour
Walk the cabin, and flex your ankles while seated.
Hydrate, skip alcohol
Both affect clot risk, and alcohol interacts with your medication.
Do not lift your own bag
Not into the overhead locker, not off the carousel. Arrange help in advance.
Carry medication and notes in the cabin
Along with your operative note and the hospital contact details.
