Procedure Time
The typical time for administering most IV infusion treatments is 30 – 90 minutes. However, depending upon your individual situation, the “mapping” or first dose could take considerably longer, in order to monitor you for any potential adverse reactions to that first dose.
Typical Recovery Time
There is no down time associated with receiving an IV infusion treatment. Immune related side effects such as fatigue, low grade fever, etc., can occur at any point after two weeks into treatment and up to six months or more into treatment.
What To Expect
As opposed to chemo treatments, which generally have a rapid onset, the delayed results of immunotherapies are what make them so unique. In general, it takes anywhere from three to six months for noticeable reductions in tumor size to appear on imaging studies.
Who Is A Good Candidate For This Treatment?
The ideal candidate for this treatment would be someone who suffers from one of the advanced types of cancer, such as melanoma, non small cell lung cancer or kidney cancer, that expresses certain biomarkers such as PD-L1, or has a high level of "mutational burden".
Things to Check for Immunotherapy Abroad
- Choose a cancer treatment center that has received accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), which means they follow FDA and WHO safety standards internationally.
- Confirm the name of the exact immunotherapy drug being used has been studied in clinical trials and not some new, untested "treatment".
- Verify that the clinic conducts biomarker testing to determine if the treatment is appropriate for your type of cancer.
- Establish a formal plan with your local oncologist to coordinate your care while abroad.
Risks And Complications of Immunotherapy Abroad
- Your immune system attacks healthy parts of your body, such as Your lungs, liver or colon.
- Possible permanent damage to your hormone system resulting in the need to take life-long medication.
- Potential severe infusion reactions that could result in dangerous drop in blood pressure during treatment.
- Skin rash or peeling of the skin that may become life-threatening due to an extreme reaction to treatment.
- Delayed onset of serious side effects that may not show up until several months after returning home.
