Rambam Health Care Campus (Haifa)

Rambam Health Care Campus, located in Haifa, Israel, is the largest medical center in Northern Israel and a vital tertiary referral center for over 2 million residents and 12 northern hospitals. Founded by the British Mandatory Government in 1938, it was initially known as the British Government Hospital of Haifa before being renamed "Rambam" (after Maimonides) in 1948 following the establishment of the State of Israel. It operates as a public (governmental) academic medical center, closely affiliated with the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Israel's oldest university. This strong academic tie transforms Rambam into a premier hub for medical research, innovation, and education, with Nobel Prize laureates among its staff. Rambam is a massive complex, often referred to as a "city of medicine" due to its extensive facilities. It houses approximately 1,000 to 1,100 beds for inpatients, though its unique Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital can expand its capacity to 2,000 beds within 72 hours, designed to withstand conventional, chemical, and biological attacks. This remarkable underground facility, which doubles as a 1,500-vehicle parking lot in peacetime, includes 24 fully fortified operating rooms and a fortified emergency department. The hospital serves around 80,000 hospitalized patients and 600,000 outpatients annually, performing over 55,000 surgeries and handling approximately 5,300 childbirths each year.
