Prof. Dr. Nik Ritza Kosai

Dr. Nik Ritza Kosai Nik Mahmood is among Malaysia’s pioneers in the field of bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgery. He pioneered Malaysia's first and foremost centre for obesity and metabolic surgery. He studied at the University of St Andrews, Scotland and the University of Manchester, completed his Specialist Surgical Training in NW of England and was awarded MRCS & FRCS (General Surgery) in the UK. ### Professional Background - __First Clinic/Unit Established__: UGI and Bariatrics Unit at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, PPUKM (2011) - first referral centre for upper GI cancers and obesity treatment in Malaysia - __Procedures Performed__: More than 2,300 bariatric /metabolic operations and more than 500 intragastric balloons. ### Innovations & Contributions - __Research Contributions__: Published over 200 peer-reviewed papers on outcome of bariatric surgery, oesophageal and gastric cancers, Helicobacter pylori and gastro-oesophageal reflux; obtained research grants worth a total of over RM 2 million - __Notable Medical Advancements__: Has been widely published internationally and locally including co-authoring research into the history and evolution of bariatric surgery in Malaysia; participated in the development of the national guidelines for managing all stages of bariatric surgery and the National Obesity Guidelines. - __Leadership Roles__: President, Malaysian Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Society; President, Malaysia Chapter of IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity); Vice President, Malaysian Upper GI Society; examiner for the MRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh)
