About

When Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) opened in June 2010, it was the city's first new acute hospital for 70 years. The site of the new main hospital building is also home to the original Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with services spread across the whole site. The hospital, which is located in the leafy suburb of Edgbaston, brings together services previously provided at the older hospital and at the nearby Selly Oak Hospital. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC).

Heart Care/Surgery

Heart Care/Surgery

Heart care and surgery abroad covers coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, angioplasty and stenting, structural heart interventions, and cardiac electrophysiology at internationally accredited cardiac centers. Options range from interventional cardiology procedures to complex open-heart surgery using minimally invasive approaches. Cardiac surgery is among the most expensive medical procedures in many countries. A coronary artery bypass that costs $80,000 to $150,000 at home may be available for $10,000 to $25,000 abroad at equally accredited cardiac hospitals with experienced cardiac surgeons and intensive care facilities. Leading international cardiac centers offer shorter waiting times, hybrid operating theaters, advanced cardiac imaging, and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation programs. Patients consistently report receiving more attentive perioperative care and thorough follow-up than they experienced at home. The cardiac surgeon's experience and the hospital's cardiac ICU capabilities are the most critical factors. Confirm the surgeon's annual bypass or valve procedure volume. Adherence to cardiac rehabilitation, medication protocols, dietary changes, and regular follow-up echocardiography directly determines long-term cardiac outcomes.

Addiction Treatment

Addiction Treatment

Addiction treatment abroad offers medically supervised detox, behavioral therapy, and holistic rehabilitation programs for alcohol, drug, and behavioral addictions. International rehab centers combine psychiatric care, individual counseling, and group therapy to address root causes of addiction. The cost of addiction treatment is one of the biggest barriers to recovery in many countries. A 30-day residential program that costs $20,000 to $40,000 at home may be available for $4,000 to $8,000 abroad at equally accredited facilities with trained addiction psychiatrists and counselors. Leading international rehab centers offer shorter waiting times, personalized treatment plans, and dedicated international patient coordinators. Patients consistently report receiving more individualized attention and comprehensive care than they experienced at home. The treating physician's credentials and the facility's accreditation are the most critical factors. Confirm the center is staffed by board-certified addiction psychiatrists and licensed counselors. Aftercare planning is equally important — sustainable recovery depends on continued support, relapse prevention strategies, and follow-up care after discharge.

Vascular Surgery

Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery abroad covers aortic aneurysm repair, peripheral artery disease treatment, varicose vein surgery, carotid endarterectomy, deep vein thrombosis management, and endovascular interventions performed by experienced vascular surgeons. Options range from minimally invasive endovascular procedures to complex open vascular reconstruction. Vascular surgical costs and access to experienced vascular surgeons are significant challenges in many countries. An endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) that costs $50,000 to $90,000 at home may be available for $10,000 to $25,000 abroad at equally accredited vascular centers with experienced endovascular surgeons and hybrid operating facilities. Leading international vascular centers offer shorter waiting times, hybrid vascular suites combining imaging and surgery, and structured post-vascular rehabilitation programs. Patients consistently report receiving more comprehensive vascular workups and more accessible surgical planning than they experienced at home. The vascular surgeon's open and endovascular case experience and the hospital's vascular ICU capabilities are the most important factors. Confirm your surgeon's volume for your specific procedure. Lifelong antiplatelet or anticoagulation therapy adherence, smoking cessation, and cardiovascular risk factor management are critical for long-term vascular surgery success.

Urology

Urology

Urology treatment abroad covers prostate cancer surgery, kidney stone management, bladder procedures, male infertility treatment, robotic prostatectomy, HoLEP laser surgery for BPH, and urologic oncology at internationally accredited urology centers. Options range from minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to complex robotic-assisted urological surgery. Urological surgical costs are high and waiting times are long in many countries. A robotic radical prostatectomy that costs $40,000 to $80,000 at home may be available for $8,000 to $18,000 abroad at equally accredited hospitals with experienced urologists performing high-volume robotic and endoscopic procedures. Leading international urology centers offer shorter waiting times, high-volume robotic urology programs, and comprehensive pre- and post-operative coordination. Patients consistently report receiving more thorough urological evaluations and attentive surgical planning than they experienced at home. The urologist's robotic or endoscopic case volume and the hospital's urology accreditation are the most important factors. Confirm your surgeon's annual procedure volume for your specific indication. Adherence to post-surgical follow-up schedules, PSA monitoring, and continence rehabilitation directly determines functional outcomes after urological surgery.

Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine

Sports medicine treatment abroad offers expert care for athletic injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, and performance optimization. Specialist treatment covers ACL and ligament injuries, tendinopathy, cartilage damage, stress fractures, and return-to-sport rehabilitation by sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and physiotherapists. Timely sports medicine care is difficult to access in many countries due to long waiting lists. Arthroscopic sports surgery that costs $15,000 to $30,000 at home may be available for $3,000 to $8,000 abroad at equally accredited centers with fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeons and sport-specific rehabilitation programs. Leading international sports medicine centers offer rapid specialist access, same-week arthroscopy or injection appointments, and sport-specific rehabilitation programs. Patients — from professional athletes to active individuals — consistently report receiving more comprehensive, individually tailored sports care than they experienced at home. The sports physician's subspecialty training and the rehabilitation team's sport-specific expertise are the most important factors. Confirm your surgeon has fellowship training in sports medicine or arthroscopy. Adherence to phased rehabilitation protocols, return-to-sport testing milestones, and injury prevention programs directly determines re-injury risk and athletic performance recovery.

Sexual Medicine and Treatment

Sexual Medicine and Treatment

Sexual medicine treatment abroad offers discreet, specialized care for erectile dysfunction, low libido, female sexual dysfunction, premature ejaculation, hormonal imbalances, and gender-affirming treatments at physician-led sexual health clinics. Treatments address physiological, hormonal, vascular, and psychological dimensions of sexual health with evidence-based approaches. Sexual health care remains stigmatized, underserved, and expensive in many countries. A comprehensive sexual medicine evaluation and treatment program that costs $5,000 to $15,000 at home may be available for $1,500 to $4,500 abroad at equally qualified clinics with certified sexual medicine physicians and urologists. Leading international sexual health clinics offer confidential consultations, advanced penile Doppler ultrasound, hormonal profiling, and integrated psychosexual therapy. Patients consistently report receiving more thorough, sensitive, and non-judgmental care than they found at home. The physician's certification in sexual medicine and the clinic's privacy standards are the most important factors. Confirm your doctor has recognized subspecialty training in sexual medicine. Psychosexual therapy, healthy relationship communication, and lifestyle optimization — including exercise, sleep, and stress management — are essential complements to any medical sexual health treatment.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation treatment abroad offers intensive neurological, orthopedic, cardiac, and post-surgical recovery programs at internationally accredited rehabilitation centers staffed by physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language therapists, and neuropsychologists. High-intensity therapy programs using robotic and virtual reality technology accelerate functional recovery. Inpatient rehabilitation in many countries is expensive, short, and not sufficiently intensive. A comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program that costs $30,000 to $80,000 at home may be available for $5,000 to $20,000 abroad at equally accredited centers with equivalent or greater daily therapy intensity. Leading international rehabilitation centers offer 3 to 5 hours of daily therapy, advanced robotic rehabilitation technology (Lokomat, Armeo, Ekso), and multidisciplinary team management. Patients consistently report receiving more intensive, individualized therapy than they found at home. The program's daily therapy intensity and the multidisciplinary team's experience are the most critical factors. Confirm daily therapy hours and the range of allied health professionals included. Family education, home exercise programs, and continuation of therapy after returning home are essential to sustain gains made during intensive inpatient rehabilitation.

Laser Surgery

Laser Surgery

Laser surgery abroad covers precision laser procedures across ophthalmology, dermatology, urology, ENT, and gynecology, including LASIK, fractional skin resurfacing, HoLEP laser prostatectomy, and endovenous laser vein ablation. Advanced laser platforms deliver bloodless, scar-minimizing results across a wide range of clinical indications. Laser surgery costs vary considerably between countries. A fractional CO2 skin resurfacing session that costs $2,000 to $4,000 at home may be available for $400 to $1,200 abroad at equally equipped dermatology or aesthetic medicine centers with experienced laser surgeons. Leading international laser surgery centers offer comprehensive pre-treatment assessments, customized laser parameters, and thorough post-treatment care plans. Patients consistently report receiving more detailed consultations and better-documented treatment protocols than they found at home. The surgeon's laser experience and the generation of the laser platform are the most important factors. Always confirm the specific device model and your surgeon's case volume with that particular system. Sun protection, post-treatment skincare compliance, and follow-up appointments are critical for optimal outcomes and complication avoidance.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery abroad covers minimally invasive keyhole procedures for abdominal and pelvic conditions including cholecystectomy, hernia repair, appendectomy, bariatric surgery, and gynecologic operations. Small incisions, a high-definition camera, and precision instruments replace large open cuts, resulting in less pain and faster recovery. Laparoscopic surgical costs differ substantially between countries. A laparoscopic procedure that costs $15,000 to $30,000 at home may be available for $2,500 to $7,000 abroad at equally accredited hospitals with experienced laparoscopic surgeons performing high-volume, low-complication procedures. Leading international laparoscopic centers offer shorter waiting times, single-incision surgical options, and structured same-day or next-day discharge protocols. Patients consistently report receiving more streamlined, efficient surgical experiences than they found at home. The surgeon's laparoscopic case volume and the hospital's minimally invasive surgical accreditation are the most critical factors. Confirm the surgeon regularly performs your specific laparoscopic procedure. Following postoperative wound care, activity limitations, and dietary instructions directly influences healing and outcomes.

Gynecology Treatment

Gynecology Treatment

Gynecology treatment abroad covers hysterectomy, fibroid surgery, endometriosis excision, PCOS management, pelvic floor repair, cervical cancer treatment, and minimally invasive gynecologic procedures. Options range from diagnostic laparoscopy to complex robotic-assisted surgery for gynecologic malignancies. Gynecologic surgical costs and waiting times are major concerns in many countries. A laparoscopic hysterectomy that costs $20,000 to $35,000 at home may be available for $4,000 to $9,000 abroad at equally accredited hospitals with board-certified gynecologic surgeons experienced in minimally invasive techniques. Leading international gynecology centers offer shorter waiting times, robotic surgical capabilities, and dedicated women's health coordinators. Patients consistently report receiving more personalized care and more thorough pre-surgical counseling than they experienced at home. The gynecologist's subspecialty training and the hospital's surgical technology are the most important factors. Confirm your surgeon is certified in minimally invasive or robotic gynecologic surgery. Recovery outcomes are significantly influenced by adherence to postoperative activity restrictions, follow-up pelvic ultrasound, and hormonal management where applicable.

General Surgery

General Surgery

General surgery abroad covers hernia repair, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, thyroidectomy, colorectal surgery, and abdominal procedures using minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques. These procedures address common surgical conditions with high precision, minimal scarring, and rapid recovery. General surgical costs vary greatly between countries. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy that costs $15,000 to $25,000 at home may be available for $2,000 to $5,000 abroad at equally accredited hospitals with board-certified general surgeons performing high-volume, low-complication procedures. Leading international surgical centers offer shorter waiting times, advanced laparoscopic and robotic capabilities, and streamlined pre-operative and post-operative care. Patients consistently report receiving more attentive surgical planning and recovery support than they experienced at home. The surgeon's laparoscopic experience and the hospital's accreditation are the most important factors. Confirm the surgeon's annual procedure volume and complication rates. Following postoperative wound care instructions, activity restrictions, and dietary guidelines directly influences recovery speed and long-term outcomes.

Eye/Lasik Care

Eye/Lasik Care

Eye care and LASIK surgery abroad covers vision correction procedures including LASIK, SMILE, PRK, ICL implantation, cataract surgery with premium IOLs, retinal treatments, and glaucoma management. Options range from simple refractive corrections to complex vitreoretinal and oculoplastic procedures. The cost of eye surgery is a primary driver for medical tourism. A bladeless LASIK procedure that costs $4,000 to $6,000 at home may be available for $800 to $1,800 abroad at equally equipped laser centers with experienced ophthalmologists and the latest excimer laser platforms. Leading international eye centers offer comprehensive pre-surgical corneal mapping, wavefront analysis, and same-day procedures with thorough follow-up care. Patients consistently report receiving more detailed pre-surgical evaluations and unhurried care than they experienced at home. The ophthalmologist's refractive surgery experience and the laser platform's generation are the most important factors. Confirm your surgeon has performed at least 1,000 procedures on the specific laser system. Strict adherence to postoperative eye drop schedules, UV protection, and avoidance of eye rubbing directly impacts visual outcomes and healing.

ENT

ENT

ENT treatment abroad covers cochlear implants, endoscopic sinus surgery, hearing restoration, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, vocal cord surgery, and skull base procedures performed by sub-specialized otolaryngologists. Options range from outpatient procedures to complex surgeries addressing hearing loss, chronic sinusitis, and head and neck conditions. ENT surgical costs in many countries are high and waiting times are long. A cochlear implant procedure that costs $50,000 to $80,000 at home may be available for $12,000 to $25,000 abroad at equally accredited hospitals with experienced ENT surgeons and comprehensive audiology support. Leading international ENT centers offer shorter waiting times, advanced diagnostic audiometry, and dedicated international patient coordinators who facilitate seamless care for overseas patients. Patients consistently report more thorough ENT assessments and attentive post-operative follow-up than they experienced at home. The ENT surgeon's subspecialty training and the center's diagnostic technology are the most important factors. Confirm your surgeon is fellowship-trained in the relevant ENT subspecialty. For cochlear implants, post-implant auditory rehabilitation and consistent mapping appointments are essential for optimal hearing outcomes.
