About

The Center for Medical and Surgical Research (El Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas) (CIMEQ) in west Havana near the Siboney Clinic was founded on March 26, 1982. It is both a hospital and an institution of scientific and technological learning. CIMEQ is a part of Cuba’s health care system and scientific development. Classified as a general and teaching hospital, it provides specialized medical, stomatological and nursing care among its specialities, focused on the prevention, healing and rehabilitation of patients.

It is the venue of the National Examination Boards for doctoral examinations in clinical and surgical sciences, and the specialties.

CIMEQ holds the reputation of the crown jewel of the island’s health care system, providing the best care. It was the first hospital to use CAT scan technology on the island, and is reputedly at the forefront for marrow, liver and kidney transplants.

Under the direction of Dr. Roberto Castellanos Gutiérrez, the CIMEQ has provided medical care to such high-profile patients as the ballerina Alicia Alonso, the boxing great Teofilo Stevenson, Presidents Rafael Correa of Ecuador, Evo Morales of Bolivia, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s Fidel Castro—all were patients at the CIMEQ. However, the esteemed hospital’s most well-known patients are the Cuban people themselves.

Outpatient services are offered by appointment. CIMEQ is open 24 hours, seven days a week and provides emergency care.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation treatment abroad offers intensive neurological, orthopedic, cardiac, and post-surgical recovery programs at internationally accredited rehabilitation centers staffed by physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language therapists, and neuropsychologists. High-intensity [therapy](https://curemeabroad.com/blogs/how-much-does-targeted-therapy-cost-2026) programs using robotic and virtual reality technology accelerate functional recovery. Inpatient rehabilitation in many countries is expensive, short, and not sufficiently intensive. A comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program that costs $30,000 to $80,000 at home may be available for $5,000 to $20,000 abroad at equally accredited centers with equivalent or greater daily therapy intensity. Leading international rehabilitation centers offer 3 to 5 hours of daily therapy, advanced [robotic](https://curemeabroad.com/treatments/robotic-surgery) rehabilitation technology (Lokomat, Armeo, Ekso), and multidisciplinary team management. Patients consistently report receiving more intensive, individualized therapy than they found at home. The program's daily therapy intensity and the multidisciplinary team's experience are the most critical factors. Confirm daily therapy hours and the range of allied health professionals included. Family education, home exercise programs, and continuation of therapy after returning home are essential to sustain gains made during intensive inpatient rehabilitation.

Laser Surgery

Laser Surgery

Laser surgery abroad covers precision laser procedures across ophthalmology, dermatology, urology, ENT, and gynecology, including LASIK, fractional skin resurfacing, HoLEP laser [prostatectomy](https://curemeabroad.com/treatments/urology/prostatectomy/united-states), and endovenous laser vein ablation. Advanced laser platforms deliver bloodless, scar-minimizing results across a wide range of clinical indications. [Laser surgery costs[(https://curemeabroad.com/blogs/how-much-is-laser-eye-surgery-cost-prices-factors-worth-it) vary considerably between countries. A fractional CO2 skin resurfacing session that costs $2,000 to $4,000 at home may be available for $400 to $1,200 abroad at equally equipped dermatology or aesthetic medicine centers with experienced laser surgeons. Leading international laser surgery centers offer comprehensive pre-treatment assessments, customized laser parameters, and thorough post-treatment care plans. Patients consistently report receiving more detailed consultations and better-documented treatment protocols than they found at home. The surgeon's laser experience and the generation of the laser platform are the most important factors. Always confirm the specific device model and your surgeon's case volume with that particular system. Sun protection, post-treatment [skincare](https://curemeabroad.com/blogs/top-skin-tightening-procedures) compliance, and follow-up appointments are critical for optimal outcomes and complication avoidance.

General Surgery

General Surgery

General surgery abroad covers hernia repair, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, thyroidectomy, colorectal surgery, and abdominal procedures using minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques. These procedures address common surgical conditions with high precision, minimal scarring, and rapid recovery. General surgical costs vary greatly between countries. A [laparoscopic](https://curemeabroad.com/treatments/laparoscopic-surgery) cholecystectomy that costs $15,000 to $25,000 at home may be available for $2,000 to $5,000 abroad at equally accredited hospitals with board-certified general surgeons performing high-volume, low-complication procedures. [Leading international surgical centers](https://curemeabroad.com/) offer shorter waiting times, advanced laparoscopic and robotic capabilities, and streamlined pre-operative and post-operative care. Patients consistently report receiving more attentive surgical planning and recovery support than they experienced at home. The surgeon's laparoscopic experience and the hospital's accreditation are the most important factors. Confirm the surgeon's annual procedure volume and complication rates. Following postoperative wound care instructions, activity restrictions, and dietary guidelines directly influences recovery speed and long-term outcomes.
