Charite University Hospital






Founded in 1710 as a plague quarantine hospital, it was named “Charité” (“charity” in French) in 1727 under King Frederick William I BILD. It became a university-affiliated teaching hospital in 1828, aligning with the University of Berlin (today Humboldt University) The joint medical faculty of Humboldt University and Freie Universität Berlin, organized into 17 Charité Centers with some 100 departments/institutes. More than half of all German Nobel Prize winners in Medicine/Physiology have been affiliated with Charité, including Robert Koch, Emil von Behring, Paul Ehrlich and Rudolf Virchow.
