Gastric Sleeve Changed My Life: A True Story of 80 kg Weight Loss

Do you really want to understand how life turns out after a gastric sleeve operation? You are looking at various post-surgery experiences, hoping to find the one that is the most similar to your struggles, fears, and dreams. If so, then you are definitely not alone. Besides the primary goal of weight loss, undergoing a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) are still thousands of individuals annually, who wish to get back control over their minds, bodies, relationships, and self-confidence.

In this heartfelt and frankly emotional story of a successful gastric sleeve journey, you will learn about Angela's passage through the emotional upheavals, the phenomenal changes, and the subtle wins that are usually silent and hardly ever acknowledged. Her experience might help you recall your own conflicts, and at the same time, let you see that transformation is possible. Whatever your reason might be for reading, be it to acquire knowledge or to draw up courage, you will get here an honest glimpse into the life of a new beginning, as many call it.

This is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful VSG success stories that you will ever find, simply because it is raw, honest, and filled with valuable life lessons that can serve you on your own journey.

My Biggest Problem was Being Overweight

Angela had enough of the constant and never-ending pain that she had been feeling for as long as she could remember. Almost 400 pounds in weight, it was a hard task for her to even walk a short distance without being out of breath. With a large number of health issues piling up and other treatments failing, Angela chose to undergo a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) operation.

Before VSG, she was always exhausted, full of self-doubt, and worried about her health. Everyday life was too much for her. She could hardly breathe while going up the stairs, and buying clothes was something she dreaded. She was scared of being judged in social gatherings and she never took photos.

Gastric sleeve operation is a weight-loss surgery in which a bariatric surgeon removes a part of the stomach, and then fashions a new, tube-shaped stomach or "sleeve" out of the remaining stomach. This limits the size of the stomach and consequently the amount of food one is allowed to take at a time. In most cases, this operation is done laparoscopically by making several small 1/4- to 1/2-inch incisions in the abdomen.

At the same time, VSG was a very difficult period for Angela and she too, like other patients, was not spared from it. The first several weeks were marked by discomfort, tiredness, and a very strict diet consisting of different stages: clear liquid, puréed foods, and then soft meals.

On top of that, the emotional side of the story was even more difficult for her.

She recounts the times when she doubted the correctness of her decision—mostly during the times when she had cravings for certain food and her energy was low. This upheaval of feelings is very common for such patients; after VSG, the mind will often ask for the comforting old habits, although the body has changed.

Motivation would come from each tiny success. She understood that her body was fixing itself, getting a new shape, and was very responsive to the decision she had taken. She kept on reading VSG success stories and it helped her to stay positive and reminded her that she was not the only one.

The Hardest Thing Was to Refuse My Favorite Food.

Food had always been Angela's emotional comfort. She ate when she was sad, tired, stressed, or even bored. Her relationship with food wasn't just about hunger; food was a coping mechanism. She admits that the hardest part wasn't surgery. It was a behavior change.

She walked us through her ordeal one by one;

"About a month after I had started my new diet, my best friend was hosting a birthday party. I arrived there, and right on the dessert table, under the light of what I can only assume was the dining room lamp, was the most flawless cheesecake I have ever seen. I'm telling you, it was as if my heart skipped a beat. The smell of the vanilla and the cream cheese reached me, and every single part of my body was screaming, "Just one slice! No one will know!" I went over to the table with the intention of shattering my willpower and breaking the cheesecake with my fork. But then I stopped myself. I thought about how I used to feel so tired before the diet, how nice I feel now and the promise I had made to myself. The instant pleasure of just one slice suddenly became very small compared to the achievement of my long-term health goals. For me, it was having a strong "why" that was the key. When the desire came, I just thought of my deeper goal. It was a tough decision that night, but every time I refused it after that, it became easier."

Following A Strict Diet

I have a tough diet, but it gives me power and freedom.

After her VSG surgery, Angela kept up a well-thought-out and healthy diet routine which was not mandatory but was something that made her feel good. Once in her entire life, she was nourishing her body for health and energy instead of feeding it through emotion.

At each step of the VSG diet, you should be very cautious to:

  • Consume 64 ounces of liquid every day to stay away from dehydration.
  • Take drinks only between meals. Do not drink for around 30 minutes after a meal and 30 minutes prior to a meal.
  • If you intend to prevent dumping syndrome, the point that you must take care of is eating slowly as well as drinking slowly. A dumping syndrome is the event when foods and liquids reach the small intestine faster and in larger amounts than usual, therefore symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating and diarrhea appear.
  • Remember to eat clean and lean protein-rich foods every day.
  • Make sure that both your foods and beverages are low-fat or low-sugar.
  • Refrain from the use of alcohol.
  • Moreover, do not use caffeine especially if you are in the recovery stage after the operation; because it results in dehydration.
  • Follow the doctor's advice and take vitamin and mineral supplements regularly.
  • After the period when only liquid is allowed, you should still be able to chew the food properly until it is a paste, then you can swallow it.
  • Just one food should be tested at a time. Some foods may cause pain, nausea, or vomiting after gastric bypass surgery.

Which Foods Can Cause Symptoms at this Stage?

  • Carbonated drinks.
  • Raw vegetables.
  • Fibrous cooked vegetables may be celery, broccoli, corn, or cabbage.
  • Meats that are tough or have gristle.
  • Red meat.
  • Fried foods.
  • Highly seasoned or spicy foods.
  • Nuts and seeds.
  • Popcorn.

"Discipline gave me liberty: I don't think that my cravings are in control of me anymore. I feel strong, I am able to do things, and really like the master of my life," she affirms.

Things To Consider Before Doing a VSG

Before You Undergo a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Ensure You Are Doing It for Yourself…

If you're thinking about VSG surgery, Angela leaves you with heartfelt advice:

  • Do it not for others, but for your health, your happiness, and your future.
  • Don't hurry; do deep research
  • Read VSG success stories to stay inspired
  • Prepare for emotional as well as physical changes
  • Understand that habits are just as important as surgery.
  • Recognize VSG as a tool, not a shortcut

She emphasizes that the surgery can change your life, but only you can do the work that comes after.

Conclusion: Your Story Could Be the Next VSG Success Story

This powerful journey is more than just a gastric sleeve success story; it's a reminder that transformation begins with one decision. Whether you are working your way through emotional eating, mobility issues, low confidence, or long-term health problems, VSG can offer a fresh start.

Angela's story is among the many VSG success stories that prove:

  • Change is possible
  • Determination Pays off
  • Health is priceless
  • Confidence grows when weight doesn't hold you back
  • Life becomes brighter when you finally put yourself first.

If you read this with hope, fear, excitement, or curiosity, know that all transformations start with courage, and one day, your journey may be the story that inspires another to regain their life, too.
