About

Dr William Shanahan graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1980. He first trained in general practice and gained experience in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, infectious diseases and medical microbiology. Dr Shanahan then specialised in psychiatry and in addictions and was appointed as a consultant in the NHS in 1992. He was Lead Clinician and Clinical Director of Addictions Directorate in the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust from 1995 until 2013 when he left NHS. Dr Shanahan was also Medical Director of the Nightingale Hospital from 2000 until 2019. He now works as Medical Director in the Private Practice Division at Priory Hospital Roehampton. Dr Shanahan was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College and he continues to lecture in the medical school and psychiatric training schemes. Dr Shanahan has had a prolific research career as well and he is the author of numerous publications. He was among the pioneers in the field of opiate dependence and its treatment.
