Makarand Oak
About
Mr Makarand Oak completed his training in obstetrics and gynaecology at London and Manchester teaching hospitals. He was appointed as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in the late 80s in the British Army. He returned to the NHS and held consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist appointments at Whipps Cross and Royal Free Hospital London, and Wishaw General Hospital Lanarkshire Scotland. He is now in full time private practice at The London Independent Hospital, where he sees NHS as well as private patients. Mr Oak has worked in a variety of professional, cultural, and organisational settings. He has had the privilege of working alongside many nationalities in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia through UN Protection Force. He has a deep understanding of women's health, their needs, and expectations in the modern world, where information is freely available on the web but not necessarily in an easily interpretable format and can easily be misinterpreted. He understands the value of empowering his patients with information that is easy to understand, and this enables them to make a right choice of management for their condition. Mr Oak was Associate Medical Director in Mid Essex NHS Trust Chelmsford, and was lead for clinical audit and clinical risk management. These are two important pillars of clinical governance and in turn patient safety. He believes in decision making with patients, and as such, informed consent is of great interest to him. He has developed information consent papers for gynaecological procedures that he performs. He gives procedure specific information to his patients ahead of the procedure date, and this enables patients to clarify any issues they may have and indeed to defer or cancel their procedure. He is fully registered with the General Medical Council (UK) and keeps up to date with continuous professional development and annual appraisal requirements. His special interests are gynaecological endocrinology, pelvic pain, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, benign gynaecological surgery, minimal access surgery, vaginal surgery, and reversal of sterilisation. He maintains an ongoing record including complications of his clinical activities. He has undertaken numerous research and audit projects and has published and presented in national and international journals. He has reviewed scientific papers for British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and British Medical Journal. Mr Oak is an independent expert witness for personal injury and clinical negligence cases and has prepared reports for Plaintiffs and Defence lawyers for over 20 years. Mr Oak has interests in teaching, having regularly provided education to GPs throughout his career. He has supported various charities, as well as the charitable work of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
